Dark Reflections a sculpture by Mac Whitney (b. 1936) a respected Texas artist most widely noted for his monumental sculptures. The piece is a black polished acrylic sculpture of an abstract form on a plinth base and signed with conjoined initials, “MW” on the underside of plinth base. It is presented on a black polished pedestal of tapering square section and is in overall very good original condition. This piece was acquired recently from the estate of a private collector in the Galleria area of Houston.
Mac Whitney completed his undergraduate studies at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, earning the BA Degree in 1958. In 1967-1968 he earned his M.F.A. at the University of Kansas. He moved to Texas in 1979 and was awarded a commission to build a monumental sculpture for the City of Houston funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. This enormous piece, named “Houston”, presently stands in Stude Park on the West side of Downtown Houston.
His work is in the collection of The Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; The Fort Worth Art Museum; The Witte Museum in San Antonio; The Nave Museum, Victoria, Texas and University of North Texas Museum, Denton, Texas among others.
A number of his works are scattered around Houston in public spaces and several are available for purchase at Gallery Sonja Roesch in Houston.
